Just around the corner are the very interesting caves of Kent's Cavern which are open to the public, offering guided tours into the Neolithic age. There are hotels nearby open to the public providing good facilities:- bars, restaurants, table tennis, snooker, swimming pools, gymnasiums, indoor and outdoor tennis courts and evening Cabaret entertainment. In the village are top quality Italian and 'Local Produce' restaurants, eat-in delicatessens and small, quality, supermarkets for your provisions. The whole area of Wellswood is very smart and has some excellent and interesting shopping- no 'big-name stores' but family run local shops. The main harbourside of Torquay is about 3/4 mile - good bus service, or a downhill walk. There are all shops , harbourside pavement cafes, sea food restaurants, clubs, discos, theatre, boat trips and a very large Marina. There are boat trips across the bay to Paignton and Brixham Harbours and further along the coast up the river Dart to Dartmouth. In the opposite direction you come to Babbacombe with spectacular views from the 'Downs' see photo to left. |

Birdsong Cottage is a gem, a stone built pretty terraced cottage in Cleve Terrace which is tucked away and therefore quiet, with parking in front . The house has been newly renovated, decorated with new furnishings throughout. There are two bedrooms:- the main with double bed, old fireplace and walk-in wardrobe while the other has full-size bunks. The rear door leads onto a patio area with flower tubs and table and chairs. The house is fully centrally heated with instant hot water for showers. Ideal for visits in the cooler months. |
| Some twenty miles away
is the National Park area of Dartmoor where Bronze Age man lived - there
are settlements still there to explore (Grimspound) and guided tours are
available, or just meander about at your own pace taking in some of the
most spectacular scenery in Britain. There are small valleys of crystal
clear streams, the banks of which are ideal for picnics- if you sit
quietly you may see some of the abundant wild life of the moor, including
Dartmoor ponies who will almost certainly call on you to try and beg a
sandwich. Visit waterfalls at Becky Falls, Widecombe Village (Uncle Tom
Cobley an' all) and the most visited site in Devon - Buckfast
Abbey......there's lots to see.
There are lots of leaflets in the cottage on the very many places of interest to visit or.....perhaps not just spend some lazy days unwinding, take a short stroll down to the beach and The Osborne on the sea front to sit overlooking the pool and sample the highly praised Chef's Barbeque- only 15 minutes away. But.....also, just around the corner from Birdsong Cottage is the renowned FAWLTY TOWERS HOTEL ! yes the original ....now having undergone a £1 million refurbishment. You must visit just to say you've been, but also because it has been renovated to a superb standard. Call and have a morning coffee or a lunchtime snack at a very reasonable price. Full details in the cottage on your arrival.
